Celebrating World Toilet Day: 2024

Kamonyi District, November 19, 2024 – The Mugina Sector was abuzz with activity as the local community joined global celebrations for #WorldToiletDay, underscoring the importance of sanitation, clean water, and hygiene. This year’s theme, “Toilets – A Place for Peace,”  highlighted the vital role toilets play in fostering healthier, more resilient communities through access to safe sanitation.

The event also marked significant progress in the 2nd phase of the WASH project, implemented in partnership with Sign of Hope and set for completion by 2026.

The day featured a range of engaging activities, including skits, songs, and  speeches, all designed to raise awareness about the essential link between sanitation and community resilience. Additionally, hygiene club memberswere provided with a variety of hygiene materials such as toilet paper, soaps, and other essential supplies, reinforcing the importance of maintaining proper hygiene practices within the community.

As part of the celebrations, participants toured completed WASH infrastructures in the Mugina Sector, which stand as a testament to the collaborative efforts of ARDE/KUBAHO and Sign of Hope. These facilities are transforming lives by improving access to sanitation and hygiene resources.

“Proper sanitation is not just a health issue; it’s about protecting dignity, ensuring safety, and building resilience,” said Eugene,a Sign Of Hope Staff. “Providing communities with tools and knowledge is key to achieving these goals.”

By 2026, the WASH project aims to significantly enhance access to clean water and sanitation for households across Mugina Sector. In alignment with this year’s theme, the initiative underscores the transformative impact of safe sanitation on community well-being and development.

The celebration concluded with a renewed commitment from the community to prioritize hygiene and sanitation, with support from partners like Sign of Hope to ensure a sustainable and resilient future.
