ARDE/KUBAHO in partnership with Sign of Hope Complete First Phase of Water Supply Project in Kamonyi District

Kamonyi District, Rwanda – ARDE/KUBAHO (A/K) has successfully completed the first phase of a vital water supply project in Ntebe Village, Sheli Cell, Rugarika Sector, located in Rwanda’s Southern Province. The project, which began in February 2016, was completed by May 2016, bringing clean and reliable water access to hundreds of local residents.

The newly constructed water facility includes key components such as water source protection, a departure chamber, and a 5-cubic meter water tank. This tank will channel water through a system designed to supply downstream communities. It will serve approximately 152 households, benefiting a total of 693 people, 67% of whom are women.

Prior to the completion of this phase, the community had been relying on unprotected water sources. The water discharge from the source varies from 0.8 liters per second during the dry season to over 1 liter per second during the rainy season, ensuring a consistent supply year-round. The project is co-funded by ARDE/KUBAHO and Sign of Hope (SoH), a German-based organization.

Upon full completion, the initiative is expected to provide clean water to 4,500 residents and improve sanitation for 50 low-income households in Rugarika Sector, covering the Sheli and Bihembe cells. This important achievement follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on February 4, 2016, between ARDE/KUBAHO and Sign of Hope, which established the framework for this start-up water facility.

The system is designed to extend water supply to downstream areas, including the Kamiranzovu settlement in Ntebe Cell. As the project progresses, it is poised to transform the livelihoods of thousands of residents in Kamonyi District by offering improved access to clean water and better sanitation infrastructure.
