Kigali, Rwanda – October 31, 2024
Today, ARDE/KUBAHO signed a landmark grant agreement with the Rwanda Green Fund (FONERWA) to launch a two-year Climate Resilience Project in Kamonyi District. Aimed at enhancing food security and agricultural productivity, the project will address significant environmental challenges in the area surrounding the Kayumbu watershed.

ARDE/KUBAHO will implement various activities to bolster agricultural resilience and sustainability. The project will develop a total of 140 hectares into progressive terraces, which will significantly contribute to erosion control, improve soil fertility, increase water retention, and enhance ecosystem stability.
Agroforestry and fruit trees will be planted across 150 hectares mostly uphill terrain to reduce erosion, enhance ecosystem resilience, and maintain soil stability while ensuring clean air and water. The project will introduce a solar-powered irrigation system for the downhill interventions. This system will help farmers withstand drought conditions and cultivate vegetables during season C.
Kayumbu watershed will be the focus of this project
By focusing on engaging local farmers, particularly women and youth, the project aims to create a strong foundation for sustainable agriculture and improved market access. This approach is expected to not only adapt to the effects of climate change but also empower local communities, contributing to the broader development goals of Rwanda.
Hon. Dr. Valentine Uwamariya, the Minister of Environment, commended the collaboration and recognized the dedication of ARDE/KUBAHO and other organizations approved for similar projects. She encouraged continued efforts to identify areas of intervention, emphasizing their crucial role in Rwanda’s progress toward sustainable development and environmental resilience.
