Kamonyi, Rwanda – May 8, 2019 – In a significant step towards improving water access and preventing erosion, a new project aimed at harvesting surface run-off rainwater is set to launch in Ntebe village, Rugalika Sector, Kamonyi district. This initiative is being developed in partnership with the German Embassy in Rwanda, with the goal of addressing pressing water and sanitation challenges in the region.
A recent field visit by staff from the German embassy marked an important milestone in the project’s development, allowing them to view the designated site for the upcoming water harvesting facilities. This collaborative effort aims to combat hillside erosion and flooding while providing treated water for household hygiene and sanitation.
The project promises to transform surface run-off water into clean drinking water through advanced filtration processes. The harvested water will be stored in three tanks, enabling distribution to local households. The embassy team praised the innovative approach of the project, noting its dual benefit of preventing erosion and enhancing agricultural productivity for local farmers.
One of the significant advantages of this project is the reduction in the distance villagers must travel to access water. Previously, residents living on the hillside had to trek long distances to fetch water. With the new facilities, residents will now have access to water within 500 meters of their homes.
The initiative is expected to benefit approximately 50 households, ultimately impacting around 150 families who will gain access to treated water from the harvesting facilities. Local resident Mr. Jean Damascene Mugengana expressed his gratitude for the project, calling it a “novelty in the area.” He added, “I am grateful for both ARDE and the German embassy in Rwanda for initiating it,” and expressed hope that the project could expand to benefit a wider community, as access to clean water remains a critical issue in Kamonyi.
As the project unfolds, it is anticipated that it will bring lasting improvements to the quality of life in Ntebe village, providing essential water resources while promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the region.
